CHAT GPT and Artificial Intelligence updates to Google will completely change the way students learn (and maybe cheat?)

This is really about developing 21st-century learning skills and social-emotional learning skills to survive and thrive in a changing world.

  • First covid,
  • then Chat GPT...
  • Who knows what's next?

Critical Thinking Topics explored by the Virtual Substitute Teacher / Virtual Support Teacher video lesson

  • What is Chat GPT?

  • How well can Chat GPT summarize and find the main idea from complex texts?

  • Can Chat GPT really produce creative writing with personal examples?

  • The Google Search Algorithm has learned to be sexist (and what you can do about it.)

  • Should I panic about Chat GPT and Artificial Intelligence?

  • Should I trust my robot friend?

Students fill out worksheets to document their learning at multiple points in the lesson: (beginning, middle, and end)

  • Evidence from the text

  • Explain their own thinking

Students collaborate and participate in small group and whole class conversations to develop a deeper understanding of the issue.

  • These conversations can provide multiple opportunities to listen to students to see what they understand. (Anecdotal observation / assessment.)

Students brainstorm criteria to decide if Chat GPT should be allowed in schools or is this cheating. (Worksheet 5)

  • What's the point of school?

  • What does cheating mean?

The long version of the video walks students through a FOUR CORNERS debate.

At the end, students fill out a written response: Should Chat GPT be allowed in schools? An optional rubric is included.

  • Point

  • Evidence from the text

  • Explain how the evidence from the text proves their point using criteria.

NO PREP, just PRINT and WATCH instructions

After you purchase this resource, there will be a GREEN BUTTON to download the PDF file.

STEP 1: Print the PDF file.

It has Worksheets #1 to #5.

STEP 2: Show the video lesson

Decide which video you will use with your class.

The long version is great to leave behind for a substitute teacher, as the video does everything.

It explains how to fill out the handouts and also shows a visual timer during the work periods.

All your substitute teacher needs to do is classroom management and support the student learning!

  • Version 1 (Short Version) - 1 hour 9 minutes

This video tells you when to pause for class discussions.

*Please note: The short version does NOT walk your students through the four corners debate. That is part of the full lesson. This shorter version is for teachers who have their own debate format and just want to use the video for information about Chat GPT.

  • Version 2 (FULL lesson) - 3 hours 9 minutes

This longer video has everything in the short version AND explains to students how to fill in the worksheets.

It also has time for class discussions built into the video (with a visual timer.)

*Please note: The longer version does not include time for students to write their responses at the end. You'll have to add time in your lesson planning for them to complete this at school. (Otherwise, let's be honest. Some of them will be tempted to use ChatGPT to do this assignment...)

QUESTIONS:

1. How do I get a copy of the editable versions of the handouts, slideshow, or bonus video / handouts?

If there is interest, I will publish these as a separate product.

I gauge interest based on comments and emails received. I love hearing about what you teach and how the lesson went! After all, I live vicariously through you! :)

Make sure to sign up for the Educircles Club newsletter and FOLLOW my TPT store. That way, you'll get a notification when I release this product. (Plus, I like to give away freebies!)

2. When will you publish the slideshow / bonus video product?

It all depends on what kind of response I get from teachers like yourself.

I'm tinkering right now with a new product line: The Virtual Substitute Teacher series / Virtual Support Teacher format.

If you like this stuff, let me know by leaving an honest TPT review / comment or by emailing me directly at Mike@educircles.org

May 6, 2023 update: I'm working right now to package up the slideshow lesson. It won't have the lesson plan, but you'll be able to watch the YouTube video to get a sense of timing. Stay tuned!

PS: Technically, ChatGPT is a brand and is one word (as you can see from this OpenAI blog post.) But, lots of us use two words to describe Chat GPT.
