Description

Our students don't want to work. Here's a Social Emotional Learning strategy that might get them to start.

  • SEOT Step to Success 012 is to PROCRASTINATE WITH PURPOSE.

  • NO PREP reading passage with discussion questions and answer key.

  • Print the PDF, show the optional video, and discuss.

  • Give students opportunities to develop Self Awareness and Self Control by setting goals.

NO SURPRISES! Please look at the preview file (besides the product cover images.) It shows you exactly what you get.

NO PREP, JUST PRINT.

  • There is a single PDF to print.

  • THE PDF includes the reading passage, discussion questions and answer key.

  • Links to the optional (editable) Microsoft Word and Google Docs are also included in the PDF.

  • The student handout includes a QR code to the YouTube video. If students are allowed to use phones, they can scan the code at the bottom of their handout to go to the video.

UNIVERSAL DESIGN FOR LEARNING (UDL) - Multiple ways to access content

This Social Emotional Learning Strategy content is available in three formats:

UDL Option 1: Students can read the printed handout.

  • The handout article is a tidied up transcription of the video with questions

UDL Option 2: Students can watch the FREE YouTube video lesson

UDL Option 3: Students can use a screen reader to access the Google Doc.

  • Google Docs provides accessibility tools so a screen reader can read the document.

  • If you are using a Chromebook, it comes with a built-in screen reader called ChromeVox. (Learn more)

  • Please note: I CANNOT provide technical support for screen readers. I can only provide a Google Doc file which can be easily read by screen reader software.

SEOT is a way to think about how to achieve your goals. It’s an acronym. It stands for Strategies, Effort, Optimize, and Tinker.

PROCRASTINATE WITH PURPOSE

SEOT Steps to Success #012

There's a theory that people who rush in and finish a task right after learning about it don't really give themselves a chance to play with the problem. They're so focused on getting it done right away that they tend to go with one of the first solutions they come up with.

On the other hand, people who procrastinate too much only focus on the task because the deadline is right around the corner. At that point, it's hard to incubate ideas because they're under immense stress to get the job done before it's due.

But the people in between who procrastinate a little bit but still make sure they have enough time to get the job done well before the deadline -they're in a sweet spot.

They have the opportunity to cook up new ideas in the back of their minds as they procrastinate and do other things. Their mind can wander and wonder about the nature of the problem and why it exists instead of just rushing to get the problem done.

SEOT is an acronym to help us get the most out of life. The T stands for Tinker.

SEOT Step to Success #12 is to PROCRASTINATE WITH PURPOSE.

Tinkering is all about playing with our ideas to see what happens. If the research suggests that procrastinating a little bit might actually help us be more creative, then how might we do that?

Well, if we're going to procrastinate with purpose, then we would need to make sure we understand the problem first so that our minds can work on it in the background as we do other things.

Think about your goals. Wonder about the nature of your goal. Wonder what's keeping you from achieving this goal. Wonder to yourself what might be the next action you take that might help you reach this goal? You don't have to do any action right now. You're just wondering about what you might do.

Maybe you could try to eat healthier snacks. Maybe you might try to avoid the middle part of the grocery store to avoid buying packaged foods. Maybe you might stop using your credit cards because the interest is so high and instead just pay with debit or cash.

Just wonder about your goals and what you might try to do to reach your objective. Then, procrastinate and see what pops into your head.

Warning: Procrastinating with purpose only works if you understand the assignment first and make sure you have enough time at the end to complete the task before the deadline. Otherwise, you're just procrastinating.

Discussion Questions

  1. According to this article, what obstacles stop people from achieving their goals?
  2. Why do you think those obstacles stop people from achieving their goals?
  3. How might this strategy help people to achieve their goals?
  4. Why might this strategy not help people to achieve their goals?

TAKE ACTION: Identify a goal you’re working on: __________________________

  • Write down a few “I wonder” questions related to your goal. Focus on obstacles / next actions.
  • Come back in a few days and answer your “I wonder questions.”
